John Power was born in New York City and studied at the Art Students League and the School of Visual Arts. He currently lives and works in New Jersey. For his year as a 2023 Oyster Point Artist in Residence (AIR), we have selected his watercolors and pen and ink sketches to inhabit our guest rooms.
John Power’s watercolors are inspired by the ocean but have the vitality and drama of abstract expressionism. His pen and ink sketches are somewhat calligraphic in nature and in the tradition of the gestural abstraction of the New York School.
He has found great inspiration at the Jersey shore producing many works in oil and watercolor. Most recently he has been drawn to the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge where he is working on a series of Expressionist watercolors.
John’s work is represented in both private and corporate collections, including the Federal Reserve Bank of NY. He has won awards at the Annapolis Maritime Museum and has participated in many exhibitions. He teaches figure drawing at the Morris County Art Association and offers workshops throughout the year.
